Chelsea beat Manchester United to boost UCL hopes

Chelsea took a significant step towards securing Champions League football for next season as Marc Cucurella’s second-half header earned them a crucial 1-0 victory over Manchester United at Stamford Bridge on Friday, May 16, 2025. The win elevates Chelsea to fourth place in the Premier League.

The decisive goal came when Spanish full-back Cucurella expertly guided a header past Andre Onana from an excellent Reece James cross. The result means Chelsea’s Champions League qualification destiny will be in their own hands on the final weekend of the domestic season. They currently sit above Aston Villa on goal difference and are one point clear of sixth-placed Manchester City, who have a game in hand.

The match was not without contention. Manchester United saw a first-half volley from Harry Maguire disallowed for offside following a VAR review. Chelsea’s Reece James also struck the post with a swirling effort before halftime. In the second half, a penalty initially awarded to Chelsea when Tyrique George went down under a challenge from Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana was overturned after VAR intervention determined Onana had played the ball first.

Despite an important Europa League final against Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday, May 21, Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim selected a strong starting lineup for the visit to west London. Amorim had stated before the match his intention to keep his players in a competitive mindset. However, his side struggled to create clear opportunities, failing to register a permissible shot on target in the first half and only significantly threatening late in the game through an Amad Diallo effort that forced a save from Robert Sanchez.

The defeat marks Manchester United’s 18th in 37 Premier League matches this season and extends their winless run in the league to eight games, leaving them in 16th position. Their most viable route to Champions League football now rests entirely on winning the Europa League.

For Chelsea, who endured a period of inconsistent form around the turn of the year after a strong start to the season, this victory continues a vital late surge. Despite managing a “striker crisis” that saw academy graduate Tyrique George lead their attack, Chelsea demonstrated greater desire and defended resolutely after taking the lead. A win at Nottingham Forest on the final day will guarantee their place in the 2025-26 Champions League.

Notably, both Europa League finalists, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur, will head into their midweek continental decider on the back of Premier League defeats.
