Dan Ashworth Appointed as FA’s First Chief Football Officer
The Football Association (FA) announced on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, the appointment of Dan Ashworth as its first-ever chief football officer. In this newly established role, Ashworth will assume strategic oversight for all England men’s and women’s national teams.
A key component of Ashworth’s responsibilities will be to spearhead the regeneration of St. George’s Park. The national football centre is set for a significant upgrade of its world-class performance facilities and pitches, particularly as England prepares to co-host the Euro 2028 championship.
The 54-year-old Ashworth is returning to the FA, where he previously served as director of elite development and later as technical director between 2013 and 2019. Following his initial tenure with the governing body, Ashworth held high-profile roles at several Premier League clubs. He worked as technical director at West Bromwich Albion and Brighton & Hove Albion before becoming sporting director at Newcastle United. More recently, he had a brief five-month spell as sporting director at Manchester United, which concluded in December 2024.
Ashworth’s extensive experience across club and national football administration is expected to be pivotal in shaping the future strategic direction of English football under this new FA leadership structure.
