Marta Vieira da Silva, the all-time top goal scorer of Brazil women’s football, will be seen in further action, set to play international friendlies against Japan. The Brazil women’s coach, Arthur Elias, wants Marta in as he looks ahead to the 2025 Copa America.

The 39-year-old legend retired last year after Brazil lost against the USA in the Paris Olympics finale. She decided to step down from the national team nine months ago in April 2024.

Earlier this year, she extended her club contract for two years, and now she has been recalled to the national squad. This is definitely going to be a breakthrough for her soccer career and a fair opportunity for those who have not seen enough of her.

Marta has received the most FIFA Player of the Year titles over the years, and the former Brazil women’s captain has scored the highest number of goals for her country. Wearing Brazil’s jersey, the legendary dribbler-cum-striker has scored in five different World Cups, and she holds the record of scoring 17 goals in the tournament. Even in the Olympics, she has won silver thrice, but it left her dissatisfied, leading to her retirement.

“I was with Marta recently and spoke with her. She said she is available to help the team while she is playing at a high level, as she is now,” Elias told the press. “Marta has had a great season and has been very important for her club, which is the American League champion.”

He has included 33-year-old Debinha along with Marta and other young footballers in the 26-member squad. In São Paulo, Brazil is going to play against Japan on the 30th of May and the 2nd of June.

Arthur Elias and the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) have higher expectations for the women’s team. The coach has also mentioned how positively influential this experienced Marta can be for the newcomers. Marta may play in the ensuing Copa America to defend the championship. The 2027 World Cup is a big question, but the legend has not said anything until now.

The story of Lionel Messi once stepping down and later winning the World Cup has inspired the entire globe. Now, Marta is the protagonist of a similar sort of story, and that’s obviously a revolution for women’s football. Earlier this week, a former female footballer printed her CV on her top to spread awareness of the challenges female footballers face after a certain age and career break. After this incident, Marta being welcomed back into the national squad is bringing hope.
