De Zerbi Frustrated as Spurs Draw Leaves Survival in Balance

De Zerbi was frustrated as Tottenham Hotspur missed a major chance to secure Premier League safety after a dramatic 1-1 draw against Leeds United.

Spurs led through a spectacular strike from Mathys Tel at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. However, the young forward later conceded a reckless penalty during the second half. Dominic Calvert-Lewin converted the spot-kick after Tel’s high challenge on Ethan Ampadu. This result keeps the North London club in a tense relegation battle with West Ham United.

Roberto De Zerbi admitted the immense pressure of the situation impacted his squad. “We didn’t play a great game – we played a good game,” the Italian told Match of the Day. He remains supportive of Tel despite the costly error. “He is young and is a talent. I will kiss him and hug him,” De Zerbi added.

The manager noted that his players showed the right spirit despite making too many mistakes. “If we want to win we have to reduce the mistakes,” the Spurs boss insisted. He acknowledged that the fight for survival will likely continue until the final weekend. “It is tough for us and tough for everyone,” the former Brighton manager noted.

Goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky earned significant praise for several vital saves during the match. His stunning reflexes preserved a point that could eventually prove crucial for top-flight survival. James Maddison also made a late appearance for his first action since a serious pre-season injury. De Zerbi remained focused on the recent improvement in results.

“In the last four games we made eight points,” the head coach explained. Spurs must now prepare for a difficult trip to Chelsea on 19 May. If West Ham win on Sunday, the Lilywhites will return to the bottom three. The battle to avoid the Championship appears set for a final-day decider.
