Dortmund hold Sporting to Reach Champions League Last 16
Borussia Dortmund secured their place in the Champions League last 16 after a 0-0 draw with Sporting CP in the second leg of their play-off tie.1 The result, combined with their 3-0 victory in the first leg, ensured a comfortable aggregate win for the German side.
Despite dominating possession and creating several chances, Dortmund were unable to find a breakthrough against a resolute Sporting defense. They were awarded a penalty in the second half, but Serhou Guirassy’s effort was saved by Sporting goalkeeper Rui Silva.2
Dortmund’s progression to the last 16 marks a successful start for new manager Niko Kovač, who took over last week. They will now face either Aston Villa or Lille in the next round.
Sporting CP will be disappointed to have exited the Champions League, particularly after their heavy defeat in the first leg. They struggled to create any meaningful chances in the second leg and were unable to threaten Dortmund’s goal.
Dortmund will now turn their attention back to the Bundesliga, where they will be hoping to improve their league position. They currently sit in 11th place and face a crucial match against Bochum on Saturday.
