Liverpool drop points at Aston Villa in pulsating 2-2 draw

Liverpool extended their unbeaten run in the Premier League to 20 matches, but were held to a 2-2 draw by Aston Villa at Villa Park. Mohamed Salah was once again the standout performer for the Reds, scoring one goal and setting up another, while Marcus Rashford impressed on his first start for Villa.

The match was a thrilling encounter, with both teams creating numerous chances. Salah opened the scoring for Liverpool, but goals from Youri Tielemans and Ollie Watkins gave Villa the lead. Trent Alexander-Arnold then leveled the score for Liverpool, but they were unable to find a winner despite a late chance for substitute Darwin Nunez.

Salah’s performance highlighted his exceptional quality and his importance to Liverpool. The Egyptian forward scored his 25th goal of the season and provided his 16th assist, taking his tally to 41 goal involvements in the Premier League this season.

He is now just the fifth player in Premier League history to achieve 15 goals and 15 assists in a single season, joining an elite group that includes Eric Cantona, Matt Le Tissier, Thierry Henry, and Eden Hazard.

Rashford, who joined Villa on loan from Manchester United in January, produced an encouraging display on his first start for the club. He was a constant threat in attack and played a key role in Villa’s first goal, with his cross being deflected into the net by Virgil van Dijk.

This performance will be a boost for Rashford, who has endured a difficult season. He will be hoping to continue his good form and help Villa secure a top-six finish.

The draw leaves Liverpool eight points clear at the top of the Premier League table, although Arsenal have a game in hand and could close the gap to five points with a win over West Ham on Saturday.

Aston Villa remain in ninth place, five points adrift of the top four.5 They will be hoping to continue their push for European qualification in the coming weeks.
