Feyenoord shock Bayern with emphatic Champions League win
Bayern Munich’s hopes of securing automatic qualification for the Champions League knockout stages suffered a setback as they fell to a surprise 3-0 defeat against Feyenoord. The loss leaves Bayern outside the top eight with just one group game remaining.
The match got off to a chaotic start with a lengthy delay due to smoke from flares obscuring visibility on the pitch. Once play resumed, Bayern struggled to find their rhythm and fell behind midway through the first half when Santiago Gimenez fired past Manuel Neuer.
Feyenoord goalkeeper Justin Bijlow then produced a superb save to deny Harry Kane an equalizer before Gimenez doubled the lead from the penalty spot on the stroke of half-time.
Despite Bayern’s efforts to get back into the game, Bijlow continued to frustrate them with another impressive save to deny Jamal Musiala. Feyenoord then sealed the victory with a late goal from Ayase Ueda.
The defeat leaves Bayern in 15th place in the Champions League table, one point outside the top eight. They now face a must-win game against Slovan Bratislava in their final group match to have any chance of avoiding the play-off round.
Feyenoord’s victory boosts their own hopes of a top-eight finish. They climb to 11th place, level on points with eighth-placed Leverkusen. They will be looking to secure a positive result in their final group game against Lille.
