Olympiacos Mark Centenary with Victory and Festivities
Greek giants Olympiacos celebrated their 100th anniversary with a weekend of festivities, victories, and the announcement of manager José Luis Mendilibar’s contract extension until 2026. The celebrations encompassed both basketball and football successes, creating a memorable occasion for one of Greece’s most storied clubs.
The weekend began with Olympiacos’ basketball team defeating Partizan in the EuroLeague in Piraeus. This was followed by the football team’s hard-fought 1-0 victory over OFI Crete, managed by Serbian coach Milan Rastavac, in the Stoiximan Super League.
The football match, held at the “G. Karaiskakis” stadium, was preceded by a grand celebration. The stadium was decorated in red and white, with fans and the club collaborating on a choreographed display. Olympiacos players wore a special, limited-edition jersey designed for the occasion, and the team entered the field to the sound of their first-ever anthem.
The only goal of the game came in the 44th minute. Rodinei won and converted a penalty after being fouled by OFI’s Luis, who was subsequently sent off for a second yellow card. The victory extended Olympiacos’ lead over second-placed AEK to seven points.
Following the match, thousands of Olympiacos supporters took to the streets of Athens, celebrating with fireworks and passionate displays of support. The scenes quickly gained international attention on social media. The anniversary celebrations highlighted Olympiacos’ status as not only Greece’s most successful club but also as Europe’s most successful multi-sport organization.
