Højlund and Garnacho End Droughts as Man United Ease Past Leicester
Rasmus Højlund and Alejandro Garnacho both ended goal droughts, and Bruno Fernandes continued his scoring form, as Manchester United secured a comfortable 3-0 victory over Leicester City at the King Power Stadium on Sunday. The win, only United’s second in successive matches since late January, lifts them to 13th in the Premier League, while Leicester remain deep in relegation trouble.
Højlund opened the scoring in the 28th minute, ending a barren run stretching back to mid-December. The goal came after Christian Eriksen had rattled the post with a curling effort.
Garnacho thought he had doubled United’s lead early in the second half, but his well-taken finish was ruled out for offside. However, the Argentine international did find the net in the 67th minute, ending a 24-match goal drought in all competitions. He collected a pass from Fernandes and drilled a shot home.
Fernandes, fresh from a hat-trick in Thursday’s 4-1 Europa League win over Real Sociedad, completed the scoring with a fine late goal, adding to his recent impressive form.
United Show Signs of Progress, Leicester’s Woes Deepen
The victory provides a boost for Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim, whose team had been struggling for consistency in a disappointing campaign. While languishing in the bottom half of the table, the win offers some signs of progress.
“I think you can see some progress,” Fernandes told Sky Sports. “But that has to go on and on. We have important games. I want to score many goals as I can as it’s a big part of my game and I need to assist my teammates. I need to get onto the edge of the box and get goals as it is one of my qualities. Very pleased and very important to get the job done today.”
For Leicester, the defeat leaves them facing an increasingly likely relegation. They are now the first team in English top-flight history to lose seven consecutive home games without scoring. They sit second-bottom in the table on 17 points from 29 games, nine points from safety.
Leicester manager Ruud van Nistelrooy acknowledged the difference in quality: “I think in both boxes the difference in quality showed. The efficiency in finishing chances, and also defending key moments in the game. Overall if you look at the metrics of the game there’s not much in it. But obviously the efficiency is there.” The match highlighted United’s improved attacking efficiency and Leicester’s continued struggles at both ends of the pitch.
