Forest beat Man City 1-0 with late Hudson-Odoi goal
Callum Hudson-Odoi’s 83rd-minute goal earned Nottingham Forest a crucial 1-0 victory over Manchester City at the City Ground on Saturday, significantly boosting their hopes of securing a top-four Premier League finish and Champions League qualification. The winger’s decisive strike proved the difference in a largely uneventful contest.
Hudson-Odoi latched onto a superb diagonal pass from Morgan Gibbs-White, controlled the ball expertly, and beat Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson at his near post with a low shot.
In a match billed as critical in the race for European places, City dominated possession (68% to Forest’s 32%) but struggled to translate that dominance into clear-cut chances. Nico Gonzalez’s powerful effort, which flew narrowly wide, was City’s best opportunity of a drab first half.
Nottingham Forest, while offering limited attacking threat before the break, defended resolutely. Their defense, which has conceded only 10 league goals at the City Ground this season, restricted City to just 3 shots on target throughout the match.
The home side showed greater urgency in the second half. Nico Dominguez tested Ederson with a first-time shot immediately after the restart, while Hudson-Odoi had a low effort tipped onto the post by the Brazilian goalkeeper.
Pep Guardiola introduced Kevin De Bruyne and Omar Marmoush with 20 minutes remaining, but City continued to struggle to create significant openings. Mateo Kovacic sent a powerful strike narrowly wide in added time, but Ederson will be disappointed for being beaten in the near post.
Forest’s Champions League Dream Alive
The victory maintains Nottingham Forest’s surprising third-place position in the Premier League table. They now have 51 points, four points clear of fourth-placed City (47 points). Forest also boast a seven-point advantage over sixth-placed Newcastle United (44 points), with fifth place likely to be enough for Champions League qualification. This win ended a run. Forest registered it’s first win against a big six side.
This was Forest first top-flight victory against the opponent since 1 Feb, when they thrashed them 7-0.
City’s Attacking Woes Continue
The defeat represents another setback for Manchester City, marking their ninth league loss of the season – their joint-most in a single campaign under Pep Guardiola. It is also the fifth time City have failed to score in a top-flight game this season, their worst tally under Guardiola since 2016-17.
City’s struggles in front of goal were evident despite dominating possession. Erling Haaland, despite dispossessing Chris Wood on the edge of the Forest area, was unable to test goalkeeper Matz Sels. The result leaves City in danger of missing out on Champions League football for the first time since 2010, increasing the pressure on Guardiola and his team. Chelsea can go above them with a win on Sunday.
