Rangers stun Celtic in epic Old Firm Derby thriller
Hamza Igamane’s stunning late strike secured a 3-2 victory for Rangers over Celtic at Celtic Park, ending the home side’s unbeaten league run at home stretching back to December 2023. The win, Rangers’ first at Celtic Park since 2020, and a second derby win after January’s win, reduces Celtic’s lead at the top of the Scottish Premiership to 13 points.
Rangers, despite a demanding Europa League tie against Fenerbahce on Thursday, produced a high-energy first-half performance. They took an early lead when Nico Raskin flicked home James Tavernier’s corner in the fourth minute, getting ahead of Jeffrey Schlupp.
Mohamed Diomande doubled Rangers’ advantage just before halftime, finding the bottom corner with a low shot after being left unmarked inside the box. Rangers could have been further ahead, with Vaclav Cerny wasting a chance after an uncharacteristic error from Celtic goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel.
Celtic, missing captain Callum McGregor and center-backs Auston Trusty and Liam Scales through injury, fielded Maik Nawrocki for his first start of the season.
The home side responded strongly in the second half. Daizen Maeda, moved to the wing after the introduction of Adam Idah, headed in Jota’s cross shortly after the restart. A well-worked team move then resulted in Luke McCowan setting up Reo Hatate, who slotted a finish past Jack Butland to equalize.
Celtic appeared to have the momentum, but it was Rangers who found the winning goal. Alistair Johnston’s slip allowed Igamane to lash in an outrageous strike, securing a memorable victory for the Ibrox side.
Statement Win for Rangers?
The victory represents a significant statement for Rangers, who had struggled domestically. Their high-pressing, energetic performance unsettled Celtic, particularly in the first half. Despite conceding a two-goal lead, Rangers showed resilience and desire to find a winner.
The result means Celtic may have to wait until after the Premiership split next month to clinch the title. While Celtic remain strong favorites, Rangers’ victory injects a degree of uncertainty into the final stages of the season.
