Inter Milan’s Serie A Title Hopes get crushing blow with Lazio draw

Inter Milan’s aspirations to retain the Serie A title were dealt a significant blow on Sunday, May 18, 2025, when a late penalty converted by Lazio’s Pedro secured a dramatic 2-2 draw at the San Siro. The result leaves the defending champions one point adrift of league leaders Napoli heading into the final game of the season.

Inter had a prime opportunity to seize control of the title race after Napoli were held to a 0-0 draw by Parma earlier in the day. The home side appeared on course when defender Yann Bisseck, who had opened the scoring on the stroke of halftime with a powerful shot, saw his team regain the lead late in the second half. Bisseck initially found the net after controlling a rebound from a Federico Dimarco effort.

Lazio, however, proved resilient. Substitute Pedro first equalised for the visitors in the 72nd minute, finishing from a Matias Vecino layoff. After Denzel Dumfries headed Inter back in front from a Hakan Calhanoglu free-kick with just 11 minutes of normal time remaining – a goal that seemed potentially decisive for the Scudetto – drama ensued.

In the 90th minute, Bisseck was adjudged to have handled the ball in the penalty area. Following a VAR review, a penalty was awarded, and Pedro confidently converted from the spot to level the scores once more.

Inter desperately pushed for a winner in added time. Marko Arnautovic spurned a close-range opportunity and later had a goal disallowed for offside, sealing a frustrating outcome for the home side.

The first half had been a largely cautious affair, with the first significant shot on target coming from Inter’s Federico Dimarco after 30 minutes, which was saved by Lazio goalkeeper Christos Mandas. Inter’s Yann Sommer also made a crucial save to deny Lazio’s Gustav Isaksen in a one-on-one situation before Bisseck’s opener.

With this draw, Inter Milan move to 78 points, while Napoli lead the standings with 79 points. The Serie A title will now be decided on the final day of the season, when Inter travel to Como and Napoli host Cagliari. Should the two teams finish level on points, a playoff will determine the champion. Lazio remain sixth with 65 points, two behind fourth-placed Juventus.
