Juventus and Roma Secure Vital Wins in Serie A top four Race
Juventus consolidated their fourth-place position in Serie A with a 2-0 home victory against Udinese on Sunday, May 18, 2025, while AS Roma maintained strong pressure with a 3-1 win over AC Milan in Claudio Ranieri’s emotional final home match as their manager. These results ensure the battle for Champions League qualification will go down to the final day of the season.
At their home stadium, Juventus overcame Udinese with two second-half goals. After a goalless first half where efforts from Randal Kolo Muani and Nicolas Gonzalez were denied by Udinese goalkeeper Maduka Okoye – the latter with a save that tipped a shot onto the post – Gonzalez broke the deadlock in the 61st minute. He collected a pass from Kenan Yildiz in the box and fired his shot into the top corner. Yildiz turned provider again two minutes from time, setting up Dusan Vlahovic to secure the crucial three points for Igor Tudor’s side. Juventus now have 67 points and will travel to face relegation-threatened Venezia in their final fixture.
Meanwhile, at the Stadio Olimpico, AS Roma kept their Champions League hopes firmly alive by defeating AC Milan. Gianluca Mancini gave Roma an early lead, heading home from a corner in the third minute. AC Milan’s task was made more difficult when Santiago Gimenez received a red card midway through the first half for an elbow on Mancini. Despite being a man down, Milan equalised six minutes before halftime through Joao Felix, who scored after Roma goalkeeper Mile Svilar had saved an initial effort from Alex Jimenez.
Roma regained the advantage in the 58th minute when Leandro Paredes scored directly from a free-kick, beating Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan at his near post. Bryan Cristante then sealed the victory for Roma with a strike from outside the area three minutes from the end. The win moves Roma to 66 points, just one behind Juventus. The match was marked by emotional tributes from the home crowd to manager Claudio Ranieri, who will take his side to Torino for their last game of the season.
Lazio remain in close contention on 65 points following their 2-2 draw with Inter Milan.
The defeat leaves AC Milan in ninth place with 60 points, effectively ending their pursuit of a European spot and reportedly placing manager Sergio Conceicao’s future in doubt.
Elsewhere, Bologna, who recently celebrated their Coppa Italia triumph which guarantees them Europa League football, are out of the Champions League race. Their 3-2 loss away at Fiorentina leaves them eighth in the standings with 62 points. The final Serie A matchday promises a dramatic conclusion to the Champions League qualification chase.
