Mbappe and Bellingham Score as Real Madrid Overcome Nine-Man Sevilla
Late second-half goals from Kylian Mbappe and Jude Bellingham guided a depleted Real Madrid side to a 2-0 La Liga victory over Sevilla, who had two players sent off, in a match played on Sunday, May 18, 2025. The contest took place after Barcelona had already clinched the league title earlier in the week.
Real Madrid, missing several key starters including Vinicius Jr and Rodrygo, faced a Sevilla team that was reduced to ten men just 11 minutes into the game. Defender Loic Bade received a straight red card for impeding Kylian Mbappe, who was judged to have been denied a clear goal-scoring opportunity.
Despite their numerical advantage and dominating possession, Real Madrid initially found it difficult to break down the home side, with Mbappe and Endrick missing notable chances before halftime. Sevilla’s disciplinary issues worsened three minutes after the restart when halftime substitute Isaac Romero was also shown a straight red card for a dangerous studs-up tackle on Aurelien Tchouameni, leaving his team with nine players.
Mbappe, after hitting the crossbar with a shot in the 70th minute, finally broke the deadlock five minutes later, dispatching a low strike from outside the penalty area just inside the right post. This goal, his 29th in La Liga this season, strengthens his position as the league’s leading scorer, four goals ahead of Barcelona’s Robert Lewandowski.
Jude Bellingham secured the victory for the visitors in the 87th minute, tapping in from close range after a cross from Real Madrid academy forward Gonzalo Garcia.
Speaking after the match, Real Madrid midfielder Federico Valverde told Real Madrid TV: “We played a great match and it was everyone’s job. It was a strange atmosphere, playing with Barcelona already having clinched the title, but in this club you always put everything on the line and, despite today we didn’t have much at stake, we always have to defend this shirt.”
With one weekend of the season remaining, champions Barcelona sit on 85 points. Real Madrid have consolidated second place with 81 points. Atletico Madrid (73 points), Athletic Bilbao (70 points), and Villarreal (67 points) complete the top five, who will represent Spain in next season’s Champions League.
