Arsenal beat Newcastle to Secure Champions League Qualification
A moment of brilliance from Declan Rice secured Arsenal a 1-0 victory over Newcastle United at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday, May 18, 2025, a result that guarantees the Gunners qualification for next season’s Champions League and concluded their Premier League home campaign on a positive note.
Mikel Arteta’s side, often appearing flat and uninspired, relied on Rice’s exquisite curling finish from outside the penalty area in the 55th minute to claim all three points. The England midfielder converted a Martin Odegaard pass with a first-time shot from 20 yards, decisively changing the atmosphere inside the stadium.
Earlier in the match, Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya was instrumental in keeping the scores level. Newcastle United, despite missing their leading scorer Alexander Isak due to a groin injury, started brightly and threatened frequently. Raya was called into action multiple times within the first 20 minutes, making smart saves to deny Bruno Guimaraes, Harvey Barnes, Dan Burn, and Sven Botman.
The victory moves second-placed Arsenal to 71 points. While sixth-placed Manchester City (currently on 65 points with two games remaining) could theoretically match Arsenal’s points tally, the Gunners’ substantially superior goal difference assures them of a top-tier European place. Arsenal can clinch the Premier League runners-up spot behind champions Liverpool if Manchester City fail to defeat Bournemouth on Tuesday, May 20, or if Arsenal avoid defeat in their final league match away to already-relegated Southampton on Sunday, May 25.
Following the final whistle, Arsenal players remained on the pitch to show their appreciation to the home supporters. However, captain Martin Odegaard, in a candid on-pitch interview, reflected on the broader campaign, stating, “We have to admit we have not been good enough in the league,” acknowledging the team’s ambition for more than just Champions League qualification despite ending another season without a major trophy. Rice’s decisive goal was his ninth of the season, taking his total goal involvements to 19 in all competitions.
For Newcastle United, who remain third in the table, the defeat does not derail their own strong prospects for Champions League qualification. Eddie Howe’s side, who won the Carabao Cup earlier this season, will secure a top-five finish if they win their final game at home against Everton, barring an extraordinary swing in goal difference. After registering five shots on target in the opening 17 minutes, Newcastle failed to further test Raya for the remainder of the game.
The result provides Arsenal with a crucial first home win since April 1 and allows them to begin planning for another Champions League campaign, while Newcastle will look to confirm their own successful season on the final day.
