Japan End USWNT’s SheBelieves Cup Reign with 2-1 Victory
Japan defeated the United States Women’s National Team (USWNT) 2-1 at the SheBelieves Cup in San Diego on Wednesday, ending the Americans’ streak of five consecutive tournament titles. The result also marked the first defeat for USWNT manager Emma Hayes since taking charge in June 2024. The win marked a bit of revenge for Japan, after losing 1-0 to a Hayes-led USWNT in Olympic quarterfinal.
Japan, who finished the tournament with a perfect record after previous wins against Australia and Colombia, took an early lead. In the second minute, USWNT goalkeeper Jane Campbell collided with a defender, allowing Yuka Momiki to score into an empty net.
The U.S. responded quickly. Ally Sentnor, fresh from scoring her first international goal against Colombia, equalized just before the 15-minute mark. Sentnor calmly curled a shot past Japanese goalkeeper Ayaka Yamashita after receiving a through ball from Catarina Macario.
However, Japan replicated their fast start in the second half. Campbell saved a well-struck free kick, but Toko Koga reacted quickest to the rebound, slotting home to restore Japan’s lead.
Despite numerous substitutions, the USWNT were unable to find an equalizer. Japan’s organized defense and clinical finishing proved decisive.
The USWNT finished the tournament with two wins and one loss. The defeat is a setback for Hayes, who had previously overseen a 15-match winning streak and two draws since taking over as manager. The USWNT were without several key players, including Mallory Swanson (personal commitments), Trinity Rodman (back injury), and Sophia Smith (lack of match fitness).
Japan’s victory highlights their impressive form. They are currently 3-0-0 in the tournament. Mina Tanaka, who plays for the Utah Royals in the National Women’s Soccer League, was a standout performer throughout the tournament, finishing with four goals and three assists.
