The Beautiful Game, Beautifully Told

Jose Mourinho Negotiating Real Madrid Return to Restore Order

Jose Mourinho is in final negotiations to become Real Madrid’s next head coach.

The 63-year-old is the clear favourite and currently the only candidate under consideration. He would replace Alvaro Arbeloa, who took charge in January. Arbeloa was appointed following the departure of Xabi Alonso. President Florentino Perez first considered Mourinho’s return shortly after Alonso left the club. Mourinho joined Benfica last September on a two-year contract. However, he refused to discuss his future before Benfica’s final game.

“There’s a match against Estoril,” the Portuguese coach told the media. “From Monday onwards I’ll be able to answer questions about my future,” he added. A clause in his contract allows him to leave for 3m euros this month. This window opens ten days after Benfica play their final match of the season.

Real Madrid have ended the 2025-26 campaign without any silverware. Barcelona sealed the La Liga title with a 2-0 El Clasico win on Sunday. Madrid had just one shot on target during that defeat. Meanwhile, the dressing room has faced significant internal turmoil recently. Midfielders Aurelien Tchouameni and Federico Valverde were fined 1m euros following a spat. Valverde went to hospital with a head injury after the row.

The club is searching for a manager capable of “restoring authority, identity and emotional control.” There is also scrutiny surrounding Kylian Mbappe after his recent trip to Sardinia. Fans have reportedly signed an “Mbappe Out” petition in massive numbers. Perez believes Mourinho is the ideal figure to manage “some of football’s biggest personalities.” Some players have faced criticism this term for “acting egotistically.” The pressure on Mourinho to reclaim domestic and European dominance will be immense.
