Barcelona and Spain’s teenage sensation Lamine Yamal was named the Breakthrough of the Year at the 2025 Laureus World Sports Awards ceremony held in Madrid on Monday. Real Madrid was also honoured, receiving the World Team of the Year Award.

The 17-year-old Yamal received the prestigious breakthrough prize after a stunning year for both club and country. Often described as a generational talent, he has been instrumental for Barcelona this season, contributing six goals and 12 assists in La Liga, along with three Champions League goals.

His performances have helped Barcelona win the Spanish Supercopa (scoring in the final against Real Madrid), reach the Copa del Rey final, and advance to the Champions League semi-finals as they pursue multiple trophies.

Yamal also made history on the international stage, becoming the youngest player ever to appear at a European Championship finals (aged 16) during Spain’s victorious Euro 2024 campaign, which they won the day after his 17th birthday.

He beat fellow nominees including sprinter Julien Alfred, swimmer Summer McIntosh, sprinter Letsile Tebogo, and basketball player Victor Wembanyama to the award.

Real Madrid Named Team of the Year

Real Madrid received the Team of the Year accolade following their dominant 2023-24 season, which saw them secure a record-extending 36th La Liga title and their 15th Champions League crown.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side has continued their success into the current season, adding the UEFA Super Cup and the inaugural FIFA Intercontinental Cup to their trophy cabinet.
