Liverpool claim Smash-and-Grab Win Against Dominant PSG

Liverpool secured a crucial 1-0 victory over Paris St-Germain in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie at the Parc des Princes, despite being comprehensively outplayed for the majority of the match. Substitute Harvey Elliott scored the winning goal in the 87th minute, just 46 seconds after coming on, capitalizing on Liverpool’s only second shot of the game.

PSG dominated possession (70%) and created numerous chances, registering 27 shots to Liverpool’s two. However, they were repeatedly denied by an inspired performance from Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson, who made nine saves.

PSG’s attacking duo of Ousmane Dembele and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia caused Liverpool’s defense constant problems. Kvaratskhelia had a first-half goal disallowed for offside after a VAR review. Another controversial VAR decision saw Liverpool’s Ibrahima Konate escape a red card for a foul on Bradley Barcola just outside the box.

Liverpool, usually known for their attacking prowess, were forced into a defensive posture for much of the game. Their first shot, an off-target effort from Luis Diaz, came in the 44th minute.

The decisive moment arrived late in the second half. Alisson launched a long ball forward to Darwin Nunez, who controlled it and played in Elliott. The young midfielder’s first-time shot, though touched by PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, found the bottom corner.

Alisson Heroics and Smash-and-Grab Victory

The victory represents a remarkable turnaround for Liverpool, given PSG’s dominance. Manager Arne Slot has overseen a successful first season, with Liverpool leading the Premier League and reaching the Carabao Cup final, having lost only four games, with three against their first-team. This match, however, marked a departure from their usual style, as they were forced to absorb sustained pressure and rely on Alisson’s brilliance.

Alisson’s saves from Dembele (twice), Kvaratskhelia (four times), and substitute Desire Doue (twice) were crucial in keeping Liverpool in the tie.

PSG’s Profligacy Proves Costly

PSG, the runaway Ligue 1 leaders, entered the match in excellent form, having won their last 10 games and being unbeaten in 22. However, their failure to convert their numerous chances proved costly. Dembele has been in great form, scoring 20 in 14 games.

The hosts also felt aggrieved by the VAR decision not to send off Konate.

Despite their dominance and a more team-oriented approach compared to previous seasons, PSG now face a significant challenge to overturn the deficit in the second leg at Anfield next Tuesday. The match highlighted the fine margins in Champions League football, where clinical finishing and goalkeeping excellence can often outweigh overall dominance.
