Leverkusen Stun Dortmund with Early Blitz to Maintain Title Pressure
Bayer Leverkusen made a blistering start to 2025, securing a crucial 3-2 victory over Borussia Dortmund at Signal Iduna Park. Three goals inside the opening 19 minutes stunned the home side and allowed Leverkusen to maintain the pressure on Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich.
Dortmund, who had been unbeaten at home in the league this season, were caught cold from the outset. Nathan Tella opened the scoring after just 24 seconds, smashing home a half-volley from the edge of the box.
The hosts were then dealt another blow when Patrik Schick doubled Leverkusen’s lead in the seventh minute, converting a low cross from Piero Hincapie.
Jamie Gittens offered Dortmund a glimmer of hope with a well-taken goal just four minutes later, capitalizing on Leverkusen’s failure to clear their lines. However, Dortmund’s hopes of a comeback were quickly dashed when Schick grabbed his second goal, finishing off a swift counter-attack.
Despite dominating possession and creating more chances, Dortmund were unable to find an equalizer until late in the game. Serhou Guirassy converted a penalty after a VAR review ruled that Edmond Tapsoba had handled the ball. However, Leverkusen held on to secure a vital victory.
Leverkusen’s Title Credentials
The win leaves Leverkusen just one point behind Bayern Munich, although they have played a game more. Xabi Alonso’s side have now won six consecutive league games, demonstrating their title credentials.
Dortmund’s Struggles Continue
For Dortmund, the defeat is another setback in a disappointing season. They remain sixth in the table, 11 points adrift of top spot. Injuries have hampered their progress, but their performance against Leverkusen highlighted their defensive vulnerabilities.
Gittens’ Rising Star
Despite the defeat, Gittens continued his impressive form with his 10th goal of the season in all competitions. The England Under-21 winger is proving to be a bright spark in an otherwise underwhelming Dortmund campaign.
