Robert Lewandowski continued his impressive goal-scoring form with two goals as Barcelona secured a 5-2 victory over Red Star Belgrade, their third consecutive Champions League win.
The 36-year-old Polish striker moved to within one goal of becoming only the third player to reach 100 Champions League goals, after Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. Lewandowski has now scored 19 goals in 16 games across all competitions this season.
Inigo Martinez opened the scoring in the 13th minute, heading in Raphinha’s free-kick, but Silas Katompa Mvumpa equalized against the run of play with a delicate chip. Lewandowski restored Barcelona’s lead before half-time, reacting quickest after Raphinha’s shot hit the post.
The second half saw Barcelona take complete control through quick-fire goals. Jules Kounde provided three assists, setting up both Lewandowski and Raphinha before creating another for Fermin Lopez. Milson scored a late consolation for Red Star with a curled finish.
Barcelona dominated from the start, though Red Star had an early goal disallowed when Timi Max Elsnik was caught marginally offside. Raphinha was particularly active, hitting the post directly from a corner but also missing a clear opportunity after being played through by Lamine Yamal.
The victory moves Barcelona up to sixth in the new 36-team league format, while Red Star remain pointless in 35th place. Lewandowski will have the opportunity to reach his Champions League century when Barcelona host Brest later this month.
Under Hansi Flick, Barcelona have won their last seven games in all competitions, scoring 29 goals. This marks the first time since 1959-60 that they have scored four or more goals in three successive European Cup/Champions League matches.
