Liverpool sealed their record-equalling 20th English top-flight title in emphatic style, demolishing Tottenham Hotspur 5-1 at a jubilant Anfield on Sunday, April 27th. The victory confirmed Arne Slot’s side as Premier League champions in his debut season, sparking emotional celebrations as fans witnessed a title clinch at home for the first time since 1990.

Needing just a point to secure the crown, Liverpool briefly fell behind when former player Dominic Solanke headed Spurs into an early lead in the 12th minute. However, that only served to ignite the champions-elect. Luis Diaz equalized just four minutes later, turning in Dominik Szoboszlai’s pass after a VAR check confirmed the goal.

Alexis Mac Allister then put Liverpool ahead with a spectacular strike from the edge of the area around the 24th minute, before Cody Gakpo made it 3-1 in the 34th minute, finding space inside the box to turn and score.

The party atmosphere continued after the break. Mohamed Salah scored Liverpool’s fourth in the 63rd minute, cutting inside and firing past Guglielmo Vicario, before celebrating by taking a selfie with the jubilant Kop end. The rout was completed six minutes later when Spurs defender Destiny Udogie turned the ball into his own net under pressure from Salah.

The final whistle was met with scenes of pandemonium as red smoke filled the air and the squad celebrated with the ecstatic home supporters, finally able to share the moment after their 2020 title win occurred behind closed doors due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Slot, who succeeded Jürgen Klopp last summer, has masterminded a remarkable first season, leading Liverpool to the title with four games to spare.

For Tottenham, it was another difficult afternoon in a dismal Premier League campaign, marking their 19th league defeat – their most since the 2003-04 season. Manager Ange Postecoglou, who rested key defenders Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven ahead of Thursday’s Europa League semi-final first leg against Bodø/Glimt, saw his side overwhelmed by Liverpool’s intensity and ultimately play the role of compliant guests at the title coronation.
