Liverpool edge Everton to move Closer to the Title

Liverpool moved within touching distance of the Premier League title after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over local rivals Everton at Anfield.

Diogo Jota provided the decisive moment in the 56th minute, weaving through the Everton defense before slotting home following Luis Diaz’s clever backheel. The goal survived a VAR check despite Diaz appearing to be in an offside position during the build-up, as officials ruled he wasn’t interfering with play.

Arne Slot’s Liverpool now need just 13 points from their remaining eight matches to secure their 20th top-flight championship and equal Manchester United’s record. The result extends their lead at the summit to 12 points.

The match featured early controversy when Everton defender James Tarkowski was fortunate to escape with only a yellow card after a dangerous challenge on Alexis Mac Allister. VAR reviewed the incident but opted not to upgrade the punishment to a red card.

Everton had their opportunities, with Beto proving troublesome for the Liverpool defense. The striker saw a goal disallowed for offside and later hit the post when one-on-one with Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher.

Liverpool dominated possession but struggled to break down Everton’s compact defensive setup until Jota’s moment of brilliance. The Portuguese forward’s goal ended his personal 10-game scoring drought in the league.

The victory reinforces Liverpool’s impressive campaign under new manager Slot, who has lost just once in the Premier League since replacing Jurgen Klopp. Their dominance is reflected in both attack and defense, with a league-leading 70 goals scored and joint-highest 13 clean sheets maintained.

For Everton, the defeat halted a nine-game unbeaten run and continued manager David Moyes’ dismal record at Anfield, where he has now gone 22 matches without a win, including 20 in the Premier League.

The result puts Liverpool in position to potentially secure the title as early as April 20 at Leicester, should results elsewhere favor them in the coming weeks.
