Liverpool Suffer First Champions League Defeat but Still Top Group
Liverpool’s perfect record in this season’s Champions League came to an end with a 3-2 defeat to PSV Eindhoven, but the Reds still finished top of the group phase. Despite the loss, manager Arne Slot rested several key players ahead of a busy domestic schedule, with Liverpool already assured of a place in the last 16.
In an action-packed encounter in Eindhoven, Liverpool took the lead twice through Cody Gakpo’s penalty and Harvey Elliott’s close-range finish. However, PSV responded with goals from Johan Bakayoko, Ismael Saibari, and Ricardo Pepi to secure a memorable victory.
Liverpool’s defeat was compounded by a late red card for substitute Amara Nallo, who was dismissed just minutes after coming on for a foul on Bakayoko.
Despite the loss, Liverpool finished top of the group with 21 points, two ahead of Barcelona. They will now face the winners of a play-off involving Paris Saint-Germain, Benfica, Monaco, and Brest in the last 16.
With Liverpool’s Champions League progress secured, Slot opted to prioritize upcoming Premier League and cup matches by resting several key players, including Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, and Trent Alexander-Arnold.
This approach highlights Liverpool’s focus on domestic success this season, with the Reds currently top of the Premier League, in the semi-finals of the EFL Cup, and the fourth round of the FA Cup.
Young defender Amara Nallo endured a debut to forget, receiving a straight red card just minutes after coming on as a substitute. Slot expressed sympathy for the 18-year-old, acknowledging the difficulty of making your debut in such a high-pressure environment.
“It is cruel but he has never played first team football before and to make your debut in the Champions League is probably the hardest,” Slot said.
Despite the setback, Slot backed Nallo to learn from the experience and return stronger.
Despite the defeat to PSV, Liverpool remain one of the favorites to win the Champions League this season. They will be looking to maintain their impressive form when the competition resumes in March, with their key players refreshed and ready to challenge for European glory.
