Manchester United secured their place in the Europa League last 16 with a comfortable 2-0 victory over FCSB in Bucharest. Kobbie Mainoo was the star of the show, scoring one goal and setting up another as the Red Devils finished third in the group stage and avoided the play-off round.

After a goalless first half, United took control of the match with two goals in quick succession. Mainoo’s precise pass found Diogo Dalot, who tapped in from close range to open the scoring. The 19-year-old midfielder then got on the scoresheet himself, finishing off a flowing move with a composed strike.

Mainoo ‘s impressive display highlighted his growing importance to the Manchester United team. Manager Ruben Amorim’s decision to deploy him in a more advanced role paid dividends, with the young midfielder contributing a goal and an assist.

United’s second-half performance was a significant improvement on their first-half display. Amorim’s tactical changes, including the introduction of Amad Diallo and Alejandro Garnacho, injected more attacking impetus into the team.

FCSB had a couple of opportunities to score, with Daniel Birligea hitting the crossbar and Mihai Popescu coming close from a free-kick. However, United were largely in control and limited the home side’s attacking threat.

United’s victory ensures they finish in the top eight of the Europa League group stage, guaranteeing them a place in the last 16 and avoiding the play-off round. They will now face one of Real Sociedad, Galatasaray, AZ Alkmaar, or FC Midtjylland in the next round.

Amorim expressed his relief at avoiding the play-off round, highlighting the importance of having more time on the training ground to work with his players. He will be hoping to build on this victory and continue United’s impressive run in the Europa League.
