Manchester City Women Sack Head Coach Gareth Taylor

Manchester City Women have sacked head coach Gareth Taylor, the club announced on Monday. The decision comes with the team currently fourth in the Women’s Super League (WSL), trailing leaders Chelsea by 12 points after 16 games. Former City women’s coach Nick Cushing has been appointed as interim manager.

The club’s statement emphasized their ambition to compete at the highest level. “Manchester City prides itself on competing at the top of the WSL and on its outstanding record of qualifying for European competition,” said City women’s managing director Charlotte O’Neill. “Unfortunately, results this season have so far not reached this high standard. With six games of the WSL campaign remaining, we believe that a change of management will breathe fresh life into our bid to ensure qualification for the 2025/26 UEFA Women’s Champions League.”

Taylor, 52, had been in charge of Manchester City Women since 2020. During his tenure, he led the team to FA Cup and League Cup victories in 2020 and 2022, respectively. However, the team’s failure to consistently challenge for the WSL title and secure Champions League qualification this season has led to his dismissal.

Cushing, who previously coached Manchester City Women, returns to the club on an interim basis. His first match in charge will be Saturday’s League Cup final against Chelsea. The managerial change underscores Manchester City’s determination to secure a Champions League spot for the next season.
