Cuthbert’s Late Winner Keeps Chelsea’s Title Charge on Track
Erin Cuthbert scored a dramatic injury-time winner as Chelsea came from behind to defeat Manchester City 2-1 at the Etihad Stadium, maintaining their pursuit of a sixth consecutive Women’s Super League title. The Scotland midfielder’s diving header settled a thrilling encounter, the third meeting between the two rivals in eight days.
The victory was crucial for Chelsea, rebounding from a midweek 2-0 defeat to City in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final. That loss had ended a 31-game unbeaten run in all competitions, and avenged the League Cup Final.
City, looking for back to back win, dominated the first half, taking the lead in the 32nd minute with a brilliant solo goal from winger Kerolin. The Brazilian’s cheeky finish went through the legs of Millie Bright.
Chelsea, however, responded strongly in the second half. Aggie Beever-Jones equalized in the 49th minute, calmly slotting home after a cutback from Johanna Rytting Kaneryd.
City goalkeeper Khiara Keating, who was recalled, produced four superb saves to keep the scores level, denying Wieke Kaptein twice, along with Lauren James and Rytting Kanerd. However, she was unable to prevent Cuthbert’s late winner. In the first minute of added time, Cuthbert glanced home Ashley Lawrence’s cross to secure a vital three points for the visitors.
Chelsea Overcome Slow Start, Title Race Tightens
The victory moves Chelsea eight points clear of second-placed Arsenal, with five games remaining. Chelsea manager Sonia Bompastor had criticized her team’s slow start after the midweek Champions League defeat, and her side again struggled to find their rhythm in the opening period.
However, the second-half performance demonstrated Chelsea’s resilience and attacking quality. Beever-Jones’s equalizer and Cuthbert’s late winner highlighted their ability to overcome adversity.
City’s Champions League Hopes Dented
The defeat is a blow to Manchester City’s hopes of securing Champions League football next season. They remain four points behind rivals Manchester United, who play Aston Villa later on Sunday. The match highlighted City’s first half dominance and their ability.
The two teams will meet again on Thursday in the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final at Stamford Bridge, with Chelsea needing to overturn a two-goal deficit.
