Lautaro Martinez fired Inter Milan into the Champions League last 16 with a superb hat-trick in a 3-0 victory over 10-man Monaco.1 The Inter captain’s treble secured a dominant win for the Italian side, who finished the group stage with 19 points and automatic qualification for the knockout rounds.2

Inter started the match at a blistering pace, with Martínez opening the scoring from the penalty spot in the fourth minute after Marcus Thuram was fouled. He then doubled Inter’s lead with a composed finish just moments later.

Monaco’s woes were compounded in the 12th minute when Christian Mawissa was shown a straight red card for a professional foul on Thuram.3 The numerical disadvantage proved too much for Monaco to overcome, as Inter controlled the game and created numerous chances.

Martinez completed his hat-trick in the second half, securing his place as Inter’s all-time leading scorer in the Champions League with 17 goals. The victory capped off an impressive Champions League campaign for Inter, who finished comfortably in the top eight.

Monaco, meanwhile, will have to settle for a place in the play-off round, where they will face a tough test against one of the teams that finished between 9th and 24th in the league phase.
