The 37-year-old forward had recently returned to Inter Miami’s starting lineup after missing three games, and scored as a substitute in last week’s CONCACAF Champions Cup win at Cavalier FC in Jamaica. Inter Miami later confirmed the nature of the injury.
Leo Messi on IG: “I’m sad to miss these important games against Uruguay and Brazil with the national team. Argentina, the reigning World Cup champions, can secure qualification for the 2026 tournament in this round of matches. They currently lead the 10-team South American qualifying group by five points over Uruguay, with six games remaining. They face Uruguay away before hosting Brazil. Brazil will be without Neymar.
Messi’s absence is a significant blow to Argentina. He is the leading scorer in the qualifying campaign so far, with six goals in the rounds. He has a total of 112 goals in 191 appearances.
In addition to Messi, Argentina will also be without injured Roma striker Paulo Dybala and River Plate full-back Gonzalo Montiel. Brazil will be without Neymar, 33.
