New Zealand secured qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, defeating New Caledonia 3-0 in Auckland on Monday. Goals from veteran defender Michael Boxall and forward Kosta Barbarouses, followed by a late strike from substitute Elijah Just, ensured the All Whites’ place at the tournament, marking their third World Cup appearance (after 1982 and 2010).

The victory confirms New Zealand as the winners of the Oceania qualifying region. Unlike previous cycles, where the Oceania winner faced an intercontinental playoff, the expanded 2026 World Cup format guarantees the top team from Oceania a direct berth.

After a goalless first hour, Boxall broke the deadlock, scoring his first international goal in his 55th appearance with a header. Barbarouses doubled the lead five minutes later with a volley over the goalkeeper. Just capped off the scoring in 80th minute.

New Caledonia, ranked 152nd in the world and comprised primarily of amateur players, offered spirited resistance but were ultimately outmatched by the All Whites.

A slight concern for New Zealand was an injury to captain Chris Wood, who was forced to leave the field early in the second half.

New Zealand are the second team to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, which will be held in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Japan had previously secured their qualification. New Caledonia will still have an opportunity to qualify through the intercontinental playoffs.
