NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE – Newcastle United significantly boosted their prospects of securing Champions League football next season with a hard-fought 2-0 victory against a 10-man Chelsea side at St James’ Park on Sunday.

Both teams entered the crucial Premier League encounter level on 63 points. Newcastle established an early advantage when Sandro Tonali found the net with a close-range finish just 112 seconds into the match. Chelsea’s task was made considerably more difficult ten minutes before halftime when striker Nicolas Jackson was sent off for a forearm strike on Newcastle defender Sven Botman, an incident reviewed by VAR.

Despite the numerical disadvantage, Chelsea, under manager Enzo Maresca, reorganised with Cole Palmer operating as a ‘false nine’ and produced a spirited second-half performance. Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope was called into action to make notable saves from Marc Cucurella and Enzo Fernandez, while Reece James missed a significant opportunity for the visitors.

Newcastle withstood the pressure and sealed the victory in stoppage time when Bruno Guimaraes’ shot took a deflection off Malo Gusto and looped over Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez.

The win propels Newcastle United to third in the Premier League table on 66 points. Eddie Howe’s side, who won the Carabao Cup in March, are now in a strong position to return to Europe’s elite competition. Their remaining fixtures are an away match against second-placed Arsenal followed by a final home game against Everton. Key contributions from goalkeeper Nick Pope and defender Dan Burn were instrumental in preserving Newcastle’s lead during Chelsea’s second-half resurgence.

For Chelsea, the defeat represents a costly setback, leaving them three points behind Newcastle with two games remaining. Their pursuit of a Champions League place continues with a home fixture against Manchester United before a potentially decisive final-day visit to Nottingham Forest, who are also in contention for European qualification. Jackson’s dismissal proved pivotal, limiting Chelsea’s tactical options despite their improved display after the interval.
