PSG vs Bayern – Match Preview, Team News, Prediction & Lineups

Paris Saint-Germain host Bayern Munich at the Parc des Princes on Tuesday in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final, as the holders face a side who have dominated recent meetings between the two European powerhouses.

The holders dismantled Liverpool 4-0 on aggregate in the quarter-finals, setting up a date with the Bundesliga champions who survived a potential Real Madrid remontada. PSG are enjoying their longest European winning streak of the season with four consecutive victories, scoring 12 goals against Chelsea and Liverpool en route to a third successive semi-final.

Bayern arrive with their own impressive momentum, having won nine consecutive matches across all competitions. However, a worrying hoodoo hangs over them – they have lost each of their last five two-legged Champions League semi-finals since their triumphant 2012-13 campaign.

Historical Edge to Bayern

The recent head-to-head record heavily favours the visitors. Bayern have won each of their last five Champions League meetings with PSG, including a 2-1 victory at the Parc des Princes in November’s group stage. This represents the longest winning streak any team has achieved against PSG in a major European competition.

PSG have lost 60% of their Champions League games against Bayern (nine of 15), their highest loss percentage against any opponent they have faced three or more times. Those nine defeats are the most they have suffered against any side in the competition.

Vincent Kompany has won both Champions League meetings with Luis Enrique’s PSG this season. Should Bayern prevail, the Belgian would hold the most victories against Enrique in the competition (three).

PSG Chasing History

Victory would see Enrique become the fastest manager to 50 Champions League wins (currently 49 in 76 games). The current record belongs to Pep Guardiola, who reached 50 victories in his 80th match.

PSG are one win away from becoming the first French club to reach 100 Champions League victories. Their first triumph in the competition’s current format coincided with a match against Bayern in the 1994-95 group stage.

Les Parisiens have scored 2+ goals in each of their last 8 knockout-stage games, the joint-longest streak in competition history. Only Barcelona between April 2015 and April 2016 matched this streak, also under Enrique’s management.

The holders have been dominant domestically despite occasional stutters. A rotated side lost 2-1 to Lyon after their Anfield success, but successive 3-0 victories over Nantes and Angers restored order. Six points clear with four games remaining, PSG’s next Ligue 1 title could be secured with just two more wins.

Bayern’s Winning Machine

Kompany’s side clinched the Bundesliga title with a 4-2 comeback victory over Stuttgart on April 19. Their low-key celebrations reflected a team for whom domestic dominance is routine compared to their Champions League ambitions.

Bayern have won their last seven UCL games following 2-1 and 4-3 quarter-final triumphs over Real Madrid. Saturday’s thrilling 4-3 comeback victory over Mainz extended their winning streak to nine across all competitions.

Both sides have scored 38 Champions League goals this season – the most of any clubs – with the highest goals-per-game averages (3.2 for Bayern, 2.7 for PSG). Both rank joint-first for goals following high turnovers, netting six times each after recovering possession in advanced areas.

Harry Kane leads Bayern’s charge with 12 Champions League goals, already the most by an English player in a European Cup/Champions League campaign. He has scored in each of his last four knockout games and could equal Robert Lewandowski’s Bayern record of five consecutive Champions League knockout stage goals.

Key Battles

Marquinhos will equal Roberto Carlos’ Brazilian record of 120 Champions League appearances if selected. The PSG captain faces Kane in what promises to be a fascinating duel.

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia has 13 goal contributions this season (eight goals, five assists), one shy of Ousmane Dembélé’s PSG record of 14 from 2024-25. Should Luis Díaz score or assist, Bayern would become the first club to have three players reach 10+ goal involvements in a Champions League campaign (Kane 13, Michael Olise 10).

PSG apply high-intensity pressure to 58% of opponent touches in the middle third – the highest percentage of any team. Warren Zaïre-Emery leads all remaining midfielders with 265 high-intensity pressures.

Vitinha has completed 1,370 passes this season, the highest total by any player in a single Champions League campaign on record (since 2003-04). Joshua Kimmich has made more defensive line-breaking passes (19) than any other player, though PSG have six players with at least 10.

Team News

PSG

Desire Doue and Nuno Mendes recovered from injuries sustained at Anfield and are available. Vitinha sustained a heel injury against Lyon and was training individually before Saturday’s match, making him doubtful.

Fabian Ruiz has returned after a two-month knee injury absence and is set to start after playing 45 minutes against Angers.

Bayern

Kompany picked up his third yellow card against Real Madrid and serves a one-game touchline suspension – a significant blow with the manager forced to watch from the stands.

Serge Gnabry (thigh), Tom Bischof (muscle), and Sven Ulreich (muscle) are unavailable. Teenage sensation Lennart Karl is in the final stages of recovering from a torn thigh muscle.

Joshua Kimmich and Dayot Upamecano return after being rested against Mainz. Kane came off the bench to score his 53rd goal of the season and aims for a sixth consecutive Champions League scoring appearance.

Manager Quotes

Luis Enrique: “Last season, everybody thought we could not win the Champions League because we are so young. Now everybody knows we are the champions, but we need to grow. That’s our objective.”

Vincent Kompany: “Paris in the Champions League, the defending champions, it’s probably the toughest challenge. Our belief is there, and that’s worth a lot in football.”

Form Guide

PSG (W-W-W-W-L-W)

Four consecutive European victories with 12 goals. Domestically dominant with successive 3-0 wins. Key players rested ahead of the Bayern clash.

Bayern (W-W-W-W-W-W)

Nine consecutive victories across all competitions. Survived a thrilling 4-3 comeback against Mainz after trailing 3-0.

Predicted Lineups

PSG: Safonov; Hakimi, Marquinhos, Pacho, Nuno Mendes; Zaïre-Emery, Vitinha, João Neves; Doué, Dembélé, Kvaratskhelia

Bayern: Neuer; Stanišić, Upamecano, Tah, Laimer; Kimmich, Pavlović; Olise, Musiala, Luis Díaz; Kane

Prediction

Bayern’s recent dominance over PSG contrasts with the holders’ European momentum. Kompany’s touchline absence could prove significant, while both sides’ attacking firepower suggests goals. PSG’s home advantage and need to overturn recent history may inspire them.
