Roma secured a crucial 2-1 victory over Athletic Club in the first leg of their Europa League Round of 16 clash at the Stadio Olimpico. A late goal from Eldor Shomurodov sealed the win for the Giallorossi, giving them an advantage heading into the return leg in Spain.
Athletic Club took the lead early in the second half when Iñaki Williams headed home from a corner in the 49th minute. Roma responded quickly, with Angeliño finding the equalizer in the 56th minute after latching onto a low cross inside the box.
The game remained tightly contested, but a red card for Athletic’s Yeray Álvarez in the 85th minute gave Roma the upper hand. The hosts capitalized on their numerical advantage in stoppage time, as Shomurodov turned inside the box and fired past goalkeeper Julen Agirrezabala to secure the win.
