Mohamed Salah scored his 50th European goal for Liverpool as the Reds secured their place in the Champions League last 16 with a 2-1 victory over 10-man Lille at Anfield.

Salah ‘s milestone goal came in the 34th minute when he latched onto a brilliant through ball from Curtis Jones and calmly slotted the ball past Lille goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier. The goal broke the deadlock after a tight opening half-hour, during which Lille had frustrated the home side with their energetic pressing and disciplined defending.

Liverpool took control of the game after Salah’s opener, with the Egyptian forward coming close to adding a second on several occasions. Lille’s task was made even harder just before half-time when Aissa Mandi was shown a second yellow card for a foul on Luis Diaz.

Despite being reduced to 10 men, Lille surprisingly equalized through Jonathan David, who converted after Hakon Haraldsson’s effort was blocked. However, Liverpool quickly restored their lead when Harvey Elliott’s deflected strike found the back of the net.

While this was not a vintage performance from Liverpool, they showed their resilience and quality to secure another victory in the Champions League. They have now won all seven of their matches in the new-look league phase and will be seeded for the last 16 draw in March.

Lille, who were unbeaten in 21 games in all competitions prior to this match, battled bravely but were ultimately undone by Salah’s brilliance and their numerical disadvantage. They remain in contention for a place in the last 16, but will need to secure a positive result in their final group game against PSV Eindhoven.

Harvey Elliott, who has been linked with a move away from Liverpool in the January transfer window, reiterated his commitment to the club after the match. He expressed his desire to stay at Anfield and contribute to the team’s success.

Liverpool will now turn their attention back to the Premier League and their upcoming cup competitions. With a busy schedule ahead, manager Arne Slot may opt to rotate his squad in their final Champions League group game.
