Spurs Sack Manager Ange Postecoglou Two Weeks After Europa League Glory

Tottenham Hotspur have sacked manager Ange Postecoglou, the Premier League club announced on Friday, June 6, 2025, a decision that comes just 16 days after he guided the team to their first major trophy in 17 years.

The 59-year-old Australian’s dismissal follows a profoundly disappointing domestic league campaign, which saw Tottenham finish in 17th place, their worst-ever in the Premier League era. The club’s board cited this poor league form as the primary reason for the change.

“The Board has unanimously concluded that it is in the best interests of the Club for a change to take place,” Tottenham said in an official statement. “Following a positive start in the 2023/24 Premier League (PL) season, we recorded 78 points from the last 66 PL games. This culminated in our worst-ever PL finish last season.”

Postecoglou’s departure comes exactly two years to the day of his appointment. His tenure concluded on a high note in European competition, with a 1-0 victory over Manchester United in the UEFA Europa League final in Bilbao, a win that secured Champions League football for next season. This fulfilled a claim he made early last season that he always wins a trophy in his second year in a job.

However, that continental success was not enough to mask their domestic struggles. This season, Tottenham earned only 38 points and lost 22 top-flight matches, managing just one win in their final 12 league games.

“Whilst winning the Europa League this season ranks as one of the Club’s greatest moments, we cannot base our decision on emotions aligned to this triumph,” the club’s statement continued. “We have made what we believe is the right decision to give us the best chance of success going forward, not the easy decision.”

Postecoglou has pointed to a significant injury list throughout the season, which saw key players like James Maddison, Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven, and Son Heung-min sidelined for extended periods.

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy is now tasked with finding his fifth full-time manager in the six years since Mauricio Pochettino was dismissed in 2019. Brentford’s Thomas Frank and Crystal Palace’s Oliver Glasner have been linked with the position.

Commenting on the news on Friday, England manager Thomas Tuchel, who was famously sacked by Chelsea after winning the Champions League, expressed his sympathy. “I feel for every manager and I have huge sympathy for every manager in these moments because I was in the same spot,” the German said. “If the trust is not there anymore then sometimes it’s not enough to win a trophy.”

Tottenham expressed their gratitude to Postecoglou in their statement, saying, “We have a talented, young squad and Ange has given us a great platform to build upon. We should like to express our gratitude to him. We wish him well for the future — he will always be welcome back at our home.”
