Unbeaten PSG beat Angers to Clinch Ligue 1 Title with six games spare
Paris Saint-Germain secured their fourth straight Ligue 1 title on Saturday, April 5th, after a 1-0 victory over Angers at the Parc des Princes gave them an unassailable lead at the top of the table. Desire Doué scored the decisive goal as PSG also maintained their unbeaten record in the league this season.
The victory moved Luis Enrique’s side to 74 points, 24 clear of second-placed AS Monaco (who play later Saturday but can only reach a maximum of 71 points), confirming the title win with six rounds of matches still remaining. It marks PSG’s 13th French top-flight title overall – a national record – and their 11th since the 2012-13 season.
PSG captain Marquinhos, who joined the club in 2013, celebrated winning his 10th Ligue 1 title, becoming the only player in history to reach that milestone. “It’s crazy, I’m really happy,” the 30-year-old Brazilian told beIN Sports. “Staying with a top team for so long is a real challenge. The titles will go down in history. Our ambition is to win everything.”
Despite dominating the first half with 11 shots (Gonçalo Ramos having several attempts), PSG were frustrated by Angers and went into the break goalless.
The breakthrough arrived 10 minutes into the second half. January signing Khvicha Kvaratskhelia delivered a cross into the six-yard box, and 19-year-old winger Doué connected with a volley at the far post for his fifth league goal of the season.
Luis Enrique introduced substitutes including top scorer Ousmane Dembélé, but PSG couldn’t add to their tally against a resilient Angers defence. Nevertheless, home fans were chanting “We are the champions” long before the final whistle confirmed their title success.
The title victory is a significant achievement for Luis Enrique in his first season, especially considering the departures of Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappé, and Neymar in recent years. The coach celebrated with sporting advisor Luis Campos before being joyfully thrown into the air by his players.
PSG now turn their focus towards potentially completing an unbeaten Ligue 1 season and their upcoming Champions League quarter-final against Aston Villa.
