West Ham edge Wolves to boost top four hopes

0 191

West Ham secured a vital Premier League victory over Wolves, reinvigorating their pursuit of a top-four finish.

Tomas Soucek celebrated his 27th birthday by scoring the Hammers’ only goal, poking home Michail Antonio’s pass.

The result lifts West Ham to fifth in the table, one point ahead of Arsenal on goal difference and two points behind fourth-placed Manchester United – although Arsenal have three games in hand on both.

Consecutive draws had seen David Moyes’ side slip away from the top of the table, but they created several excellent scoring chances and deserved their victory over opponents with European ambitions as well.

Both Aaron Cresswell and Declan Rice came close to scoring for the hosts, with England midfielder Rice curling a superb 20-yard effort against the right-hand post.

And Jarrod Bowen, Soucek, and Pablo Fornals all had chances to extend their lead and ensure a more comfortable outcome for the hosts, who were forced to withstand late pressure from Wolves, who remain eighth.
