Xabi Alonso sets Bundesliga record as Leverkusen wins 2-0
Xabi ALonso ‘s Bayer Leverkusen continued their impressive form with a comfortable victory over struggling Holstein Keil, securing a crucial three points to reduce the deficit to league leaders Bayern Munich to five points. Amine Adli, returning from injury, was the star performer, providing a goal and an assist.
The win extends manager Xabi Alonso’s unbeaten away record in the league to 28 consecutive matches. Leverkusen’s overall form is equally remarkable: they have suffered only one league defeat since the start of last season and are currently on a 21-match unbeaten run, having not conceded a goal in 334 minutes of play.
Leverkusen dominated from the outset, taking the lead in the ninth minute through Patrik Schick. The Czech striker volleyed home a superb cross from Adli at the far post, showcasing the team’s attacking fluidity.
Adli, who only returned to action last week after recovering from a leg fracture, doubled Leverkusen’s advantage just before halftime. The Moroccan international displayed composure and skill, chipping the ball over goalkeeper Timon Weiner after a well-worked move involving Florian Wirtz.
The victory sets up a potentially crucial week for Leverkusen, with Bayern Munich (55 points) hosting third-placed Eintracht Frankfurt, an opponent they’ve struggled against recently, winning only one of their last four encounters. Leverkusen, now on 50 points, will be hoping for a slip-up from the league leaders.
Speaking after the match, Xabi Alonso praised his team’s mentality and control: “We have developed a top mentality, and this is what this record shows. We are efficient, we are stable and want to keep doing that. In the next away game against Eintracht Frankfurt we want to show our qualities again. We controlled the game and dominated even though it was not easy. After the last two draws it was even more important to have an away win.” The result underscores Leverkusen’s title credentials and sets the stage for an exciting conclusion to the Bundesliga season.
