10-Man Real Secure Nervy Win at Alavés After Mbappé Red Card
Defending champions Real Madrid secured a crucial, albeit nervy, 1-0 victory away at Deportivo Alavés in La Liga on Sunday, April 13th, despite playing for over 50 minutes with 10 men following a first-half red card for Kylian Mbappé. Eduardo Camavinga scored the only goal of the match.
The win was vital for Carlo Ancelotti’s side to keep pace with league leaders Barcelona, who won 1-0 at Leganés on Saturday. Real Madrid remain second with 66 points, four points behind Barcelona (70 points) with seven games remaining.
Real Madrid took the lead in the 34th minute through Camavinga’s strike, shortly after teammate Raúl Asencio had a goal disallowed for a foul.
However, the match dramatically changed just four minutes later. Mbappé, who joined Real Madrid last summer, received his first red card for the club. He was initially shown a yellow card for a reckless, high tackle on Alavés midfielder Antonio Blanco, but the decision was correctly upgraded to a straight red following a VAR review.
Real Madrid faced a challenging period defending their lead with 10 men. The player count was levelled in the 70th minute when Alavés defender Manu Sánchez was also sent off for a foul on Vinícius Júnior.
Despite the numerical parity, Real Madrid couldn’t add to their lead but held firm defensively to secure the three points. The victory comes after a difficult week for Madrid, during which they lost 3-0 away to Arsenal in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie.6 They now look ahead to the second leg against Arsenal at the Bernabéu.
