Arsenal have secured the services of Spanish midfielder Mikel Merino from Real Sociedad in a deal that could reach £31.6m. Merino, a key member of Spain’s Euro 2024-winning squad, adds depth and experience to the Gunners’ midfield.
Manager Mikel Arteta expressed his excitement about the signing, stating, “Mikel is a player who will bring us huge quality with his experience and versatility. Merino’s performances during the Euros, including a crucial late winner against Germany, highlighted his winning mentality and ability to perform on the biggest stage. This quality, along with his technical skills and versatility, makes him an ideal fit for Arsenal’s midfield.
The 28-year-old can operate as a deeper-lying midfielder, providing cover for Declan Rice and offering Arteta another option alongside Jorginho, Thomas Partey, and Martin Odegaard. His familiarity with the Premier League from his time at Newcastle, and his previous partnership with Odegaard at Real Sociedad, should ease his transition into the Arsenal squad.
Merino joins as Arsenal’s third major signing of the summer, following the arrivals of defender Riccardo Calafiori and goalkeeper David Raya. With his addition, Arsenal’s midfield looks well-equipped for the challenges ahead, and fans will be eagerly anticipating his potential impact on the team’s performance this season.
