Borussia Dortmund ease past Mainz to end Winless Streak
Maximilian Beier scored twice as Borussia Dortmund defeated Mainz 05 3-1 at Signal Iduna Park on Sunday, March 30th, securing their first Bundesliga victory in three matches. The win provides a timely boost for Dortmund ahead of their Champions League quarter-final tie, while denting Mainz’s own European aspirations.
Dortmund took control towards the end of the first half. Beier opened the scoring in the 39th minute, tapping home from a Karim Adeyemi cutback. Just three minutes later, Emre Can doubled the lead, heading in at the far post from a corner kick.
The hosts extended their advantage in the 72nd minute when Beier scored his second goal of the match, another header.
Mainz, who entered the weekend in fourth place, pulled a goal back four minutes later through Paul Nebel, but it proved only a consolation.
The victory lifts Borussia Dortmund to 10th place in the Bundesliga standings with 38 points. While Champions League qualification via the league appears challenging, the win provides momentum before they host Barcelona in the first leg of their quarter-final tie on April 9th. For Mainz, the defeat sees them remain on 45 points, potentially losing ground in the tight race for the top four Champions League spots.
