Coppa Italia: Juventus knocked out by Atalanta in quarterfinals
Atalanta produced a commanding performance to defeat Juventus 3-0 on Thursday and secure a place in the semifinals of the Coppa Italia.
Goals from Gianluca Scamacca, Kamaldeen Sulemana, and Mario Pasalic sealed a comprehensive win for the hosts, who joined Inter Milan in the last four of the competition.
Atalanta took the lead in the 29th minute when Scamacca calmly converted a penalty after sustained pressure. Juventus had opportunities to respond before the break, with Francisco Conceicao striking the woodwork, while Federico Gatti and Weston McKennie both went close.
The turning point came late in the second half as Atalanta’s substitutions paid off. Sulemana, introduced in the 70th minute, doubled the lead by tapping in at the back post with 13 minutes remaining. Moments later, Pasalic capped the victory with a crisp finish just one minute after coming off the bench.
Juventus head coach Luciano Spalletti admitted his side fell short on the night.
“They were better than us in the decisive moments of the match. When you lose 3-0, there isn’t much to say,” Spalletti told Sport Mediaset. “We made the wrong choices, and they made the right ones.”
Atalanta, coached by Raffaele Palladino, will now await their semifinal opponent. The remaining two semifinal spots will be decided next week when Napoli face Como, and Bologna host Lazio.
