Dramatic Comeback Sees Man United Snatch 2-2 Draw at Everton

Manchester United salvaged a point at Goodison Park, mounting a late comeback to secure a 2-2 draw against Everton after a first half dominated by the hosts. The result spared United manager Ruben Amorim further scrutiny, but leaves Everton feeling aggrieved after a late penalty decision was overturned.

Everton, revitalized under returning manager David Moyes, appeared on course for a comfortable victory after a commanding first-half performance. They exploited United’s defensive vulnerabilities, taking the lead in the 19th minute through Beto, who capitalized on a goalmouth scramble to score his fifth goal under Moyes.

Abdoulaye Doucoure doubled Everton’s advantage before halftime, heading home after Harry Maguire reacted slowly to Andre Onana’s save from Jack Harrison’s shot. The goal highlighted United’s defensive frailties and added to the pressure on the visiting team.

Everton maintained control for much of the second half, but the momentum shifted in the 72nd minute when Bruno Fernandes scored directly from a free-kick, offering United an unexpected route back into the match. Manuel Ugarte then completed the comeback eight minutes later, driving a powerful shot past the Everton goalkeeper to equalize.

The match concluded with a controversial moment. Referee Andrew Madley initially awarded Everton a late penalty after Ashley Young went down under a challenge from Maguire. However, after a VAR review, the decision was reversed, much to the frustration of the home side.

Everton’s Frustration and Missed Opportunity

Everton will undoubtedly feel they deserved all three points, having dominated large portions of the game. The late penalty decision, and their inability to hold onto their two-goal lead, will be particularly galling.

The draw, while a point gained, is a testament to Everton’s improvement under Moyes that they are disappointed with the result. Beto’s continued goalscoring form and Doucoure’s contribution were positives, but their second-half fade allowed United back into the contest. The overturned penalty, where Maguire appeared to impede Young, added a further layer of frustration for the Toffees. They lacked attacking inputs during second half.
