Eddie Howe is set to leave Newcastle United with immediate effect, bringing an end to a transformative spell that included the club’s first major domestic trophy in 70 years, according to BBC Sport.
The 48-year-old’s departure comes after a difficult 2025-26 campaign in which Newcastle finished 12th in the Premier League, losing 17 of their 38 league matches. His final game in charge is expected to be Wednesday’s 4-1 pre-season defeat to Bristol City.
Howe took over at St James’ Park in November 2021 with Newcastle battling relegation and quickly transformed the club’s fortunes. He guided the Magpies to safety in his first season before leading them to Champions League qualification in 2023.
The former Bournemouth manager added another milestone in 2025 by ending Newcastle’s seven-decade wait for a major domestic honour when they lifted the Carabao Cup. He later secured a second Champions League qualification, reinforcing his place among the club’s most successful modern managers.
Despite those achievements, last season proved challenging as Newcastle struggled for consistency in the Premier League and slipped into the bottom half of the table. Questions over Howe’s future intensified during the campaign, although the club had publicly backed him as they prepared for another summer rebuild.
No official announcement has yet been made by Newcastle, and it remains unclear who will replace Howe if his departure is confirmed. Reports have already linked several candidates with the role, although the club are yet to comment publicly on the situation.
If confirmed, Howe will leave having overseen one of the most significant periods in Newcastle’s recent history, taking the club from relegation candidates to domestic trophy winners and Champions League participants during his near five-year tenure.
