A goal in each half from captain Bruno Fernandes secured Manchester United their first victory of pre-season, as they defeated West Ham United 2-1 in the Premier League Summer Series on Saturday.

In a competitive friendly at a sweltering MetLife Stadium, the future venue for the 2026 World Cup final, Ruben Amorim’s side showed promising signs of their high-pressing style, which directly led to both of their goals.

Manchester United started brightly, with Rasmus Hojlund striking the post inside the first two minutes. They didn’t have to wait long for the breakthrough, however. In the fifth minute, West Ham goalkeeper Alphonse Areola fumbled a cross and then fouled Ayden Heaven while trying to recover, conceding a penalty. Fernandes stepped up and calmly converted from the spot to give his side an early lead.

United’s intensity out of possession continued to trouble West Ham, and they doubled their advantage shortly after the break. A slack pass from Areola was intercepted high up the pitch by Kobbie Mainoo, who quickly fed Fernandes. The Portuguese midfielder then curled a superb, assured finish into the top corner from 20 yards out.

West Ham pulled a goal back in the 64th minute when Jarrod Bowen found space in the penalty area and fired a powerful, majestic strike past the goalkeeper.

Amorim made wholesale changes in the 65th minute, introducing the likes of Luke Shaw, Harry Maguire, and Mason Mount. New £65 million signing Bryan Mbeumo travelled with the squad but was not deemed fit enough to be included in the matchday team after his recent arrival from Brentford.

Despite a late push from the Hammers, Manchester United held on for the win as they continue their preparations for the new season.
