Fiorentina beat Atalanta 1-0 in blow to slim title hopes
Moise Kean scored a superb solo goal as Fiorentina defeated Atalanta 1-0 in Serie A on Sunday, March 30th, significantly denting the visitors’ fading Scudetto aspirations. Atalanta failed to register a single shot on target throughout the match.
The decisive moment came just before halftime. Kean won possession near the halfway line, embarked on a powerful run, outpaced Atalanta defender Isak Hien, and finished with a precise low shot inside the far post past goalkeeper Marco Carnesecchi. Kean had missed an earlier chance for the hosts.
The first half was largely cagey, with few clear opportunities. Atalanta’s Ademola Lookman had a shot blocked, while Mateo Retegui, starting despite recent injury concerns, misfired from the edge of the area.
Atalanta enjoyed more possession after the break but struggled to penetrate the Fiorentina defence. Assistant manager Tullio Gritti, deputizing for the suspended Gian Piero Gasperini, made several attacking changes, bringing on Daniel Maldini, Lazar Samardzic, and Marco Brescianini, but they failed to spark a comeback.
Fiorentina remained relatively comfortable and could have extended their lead. Nicolò Fagioli tested Carnesecchi with a looping effort, and defender Luca Ranieri missed a clear chance in the 72nd minute when his close-range shot was easily saved.
The defeat leaves Atalanta third in Serie A with 58 points, six points behind leaders Inter Milan (who play later Sunday, as do second-placed Napoli). It also ends Atalanta’s impressive seven-month unbeaten away run in the league, which stretched back to an August loss against Inter. Fiorentina climb to eighth place with 51 points.
