Inter Maintain Serie A Lead with 3-1 Win Over Cagliari
Inter Milan secured a comfortable 3-1 victory over Cagliari at the San Siro on Saturday, April 12th, maintaining their grip on the top spot in Serie A. Goals from Marko Arnautović, Lautaro Martínez, and Yann Aurel Bisseck ensured the win, keeping Inter six points clear of second-placed Napoli with six rounds remaining.
Arnautović, making a significant impact, opened the scoring in the 13th minute. Carlos Augusto chested down a Hakan Çalhanoğlu pass, and Arnautović pounced to blast the ball home from close range. Cagliari wasted a golden opportunity to equalize soon after when Roberto Piccoli went clear on goal, but Inter goalkeeper Yann Sommer denied him one-on-one.
Moments later, Inter doubled their lead in the 26th minute. Arnautović turned provider, sending a precise through ball for Martínez, who delicately chipped the advancing Elia Caprile for his 20th league goal of the season – the fourth consecutive campaign he has reached that milestone. Martínez almost added a spectacular third before halftime with a bicycle kick that went just wide.
Cagliari pulled a goal back three minutes into the second half when Piccoli headed home unmarked from a Tommaso Augello cross.
However, Inter quickly restored their two-goal advantage. In the 55th minute, defender Yann Bisseck rose highest to powerfully head in a Federico Dimarco corner.
Cagliari continued to push, and Inter defender Stefan de Vrij made a crucial goal-line clearance late in the game to deny Piccoli a second goal.
The victory serves as good preparation for Inter ahead of their crucial Champions League quarter-final second leg against Bayern Munich at the San Siro on Wednesday, where they hold a 2-1 advantage from the first leg. Napoli host Empoli on Monday, needing a win to keep the pressure on the league leaders.
