Isco Penalty Sinks Real Madrid’s Title Hopes
Real Madrid’s La Liga title aspirations suffered a setback on Saturday as they fell to a 2-1 defeat at Real Betis, with former Madrid player Isco scoring the decisive penalty. The loss leaves Real Madrid level on points (54) with leaders Barcelona, who host Real Sociedad on Sunday. Third-placed Atletico Madrid (53 points) could go top later on Saturday with a victory over fourth-placed Athletic Club.
Real Madrid started strongly and took the lead in the 10th minute. Brahim Díaz finished from close range after a Ferland Mendy cross, set up by a superb through ball from Kylian Mbappé.
However, Betis responded well and equalized in the 34th minute. Johnny Cardoso headed home from close range following a corner delivered by Isco. Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois was then forced into a crucial save to deny Cardoso a second goal shortly before halftime.
Isco, named man of the match, put Betis ahead nine minutes into the second half, converting a penalty after Antonio Rüdiger fouled Jesús Rodriguez in the box.
Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti attempted to change the game by introducing Arda Güler and Endrick, but Betis’ defense held firm. Goalkeeper Adrián produced a late save to deny Vinicius Jr., securing a valuable victory for the home side.
“I’m dead, exhausted. In the end it’s very hard to win games against Madrid, who have millions of resources, it’s very difficult,” Isco told Movistar. “I’m happy for the win against the best team out there today. Hopefully we can finish the year in the best possible way.”
Isco, 32, also reflected on his time at Real Madrid, where he won five Champions League titles, three La Liga titles, and the Copa del Rey. “I am always grateful to Madrid for having helped me fulfil all the dreams a child has and I will always have Madrid in my heart,” he added.
The victory lifts Real Betis to sixth place in La Liga, with 38 points, occupying the final European qualifying position. The defeat highlights Real Madrid’s vulnerability and adds pressure to their upcoming fixtures.
