Harry Kane Penalty Secures vital win for Bayern Munich
Harry Kane ‘s second-half penalty was enough to give Bayern Munich a 1-0 victory over Borussia Mönchengladbach, maintaining their four-point lead at the top of the Bundesliga. The England captain calmly converted the spot-kick in the 68th minute to secure all three points for the Bavarians in their first league match after the winter break.
Despite the win, Bayern manager Vincent Kompany expressed his frustration at his team’s inability to convert their dominance into a more comfortable victory.
“It is a very difficult away game and we were just back from holidays,” Kompany said. “If you had the chances we had today you would want to score two or three goals to kill off the game. We never did that.”
Bayern controlled the game from the start, enjoying 70% possession in the first half, but struggled to create clear-cut chances. They eventually broke the deadlock when Kane converted a penalty awarded for a foul on Michael Olise.
Gladbach, who had offered little attacking threat throughout the match, almost snatched an equalizer early in the second half through Tim Kleindienst, but his header flew narrowly over the bar.
Bayern had further opportunities to extend their lead, but Alphonso Davies and Serge Gnabry were both denied by Gladbach goalkeeper Moritz Nicolas.
Kompany Praises Bayern’s Mentality
Despite his frustration at the missed chances, Kompany praised his team’s mentality and concentration.
“What I liked was the attitude and mentality to keep fighting,” he said. “In the final 10 minutes things could still happen but we kept our cool. We could again have scored a few more goals but the concentration of the team was really good.”
Gladbach’s Home Woes
The defeat was Gladbach’s first home loss of the season and their first game at Borussia-Park in which they failed to score. They drop to 10th place in the Bundesliga standings.
Kane Continues Fine Form
Harry Kane ‘s penalty was his 15th league goal of the season, extending his lead at the top of the Bundesliga scoring charts. The England captain has been in superb form since joining Bayern and remains a key figure in their pursuit of another league title.
