Lazio beat Atalanta to boost top four hopes
Substitute Gustav Isaksen scored the decisive goal as Lazio secured a vital 1-0 victory away to Atalanta in Serie A on Sunday, April 6th.1 The win boosts Lazio’s aspirations for a top-four finish while dealing another blow to Atalanta’s fading Champions League qualification hopes.
After a sluggish and goalless first half at the Gewiss Stadium with no shots on target from either side, the game came to life after the break. Lazio goalkeeper Christos Mandas made a crucial reflex save early in the second half, denying Atalanta’s top scorer Mateo Retegui from close range after Sead Kolašinac set him up.
Lazio capitalized minutes later. A long ball from goalkeeper Mandas was headed down into the area by Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, and halftime substitute Isaksen reacted quickest, sliding in to steer the ball past Marco Carnesecchi in the 54th minute.
In the Lazio Atalanta match, Mandas made another important save later on, denying Davide Zappacosta, while Carnesecchi prevented Lazio from doubling their lead by tipping away a deflected Luca Pellegrini cross. Atalanta’s Marco Brescianini headed a late chance wide.
The defeat marks Atalanta’s third consecutive loss and extends their winless run at home in the league to seven games, stretching back to December. Gian Piero Gasperini’s side, who briefly topped the table in December after 11 straight wins, have now won just four of their last 14 matches and remain third on 58 points.
Lazio’s victory ends a three-game winless run and moves them up to sixth place on 55 points, level with fifth-placed Juventus (who drew 1-1 at Roma later Sunday). The result tightens the competitive race for the final Champions League spots in Serie A.
